However, the type and
quality of the vast number of accidents that have occurred in the summer months
of 1999 is indicative of the archetypal quality of the Saturn square Uranus
configuration. We’re not talking the slow, torturous accident where the likes
of the Titanic slowly sinks into the sea, giving time to contemplate one’s
mortality.
No, these accidents
have an increased severity and bone-crushing intensity where metal clashes
suddenly with metal at high velocity and extreme impact. One must think
of the numerous boat-to-boat collisions in North America, the unprecedented
number of Amtrak collisions with cars, trucks, and other trains, and the
prime example of the head-on train collision in India in July of 1999
killing hundreds.
The phenomenal number
of chemical plant explosions, building fires, and transportation fires also
suggests the combustible, sudden nature of the archetypal configuration involved.
Then there are the accidents of a more bizarre nature, yet no less tragic:
the falling tree limbs killing campers and picnickers; the seemingly significant
number of amusement ride crackups; the high number of structures falling in
major urban areas, including the crane in Milwaukee which killed three workers
constructing the new baseball stadium.
Psychologically, the
Saturn-Uranus configuration correlates with internal, irrepressible tension. Some are fortunate to
notice the tension and quickly adapt to it, others project it externally,
while others, unfortunately, are the victims of the metaphoric beach ball
imploding or blasting to the surface.
At its extreme, the Saturn-Uranus
square can precipitate psychological breakdown and crisis: the racially-motivated
shooting sprees in L.A. and Chicago, the day-trader killings in Atlanta, the
disgruntled employee in Alabama, and the numerous lesser-publicized parent-child
suicide-killings.
