On a collective scale, this Saturn square Uranus configuration has also tended to polarize conservative versus progressive, forcing groups to choose one end of the Saturn(status quo)/ Uranus(reform) dichotomy: religious riots mount in Indonesia and Iran;

student revolts in Mexican Universities, Iran, and Thailand; the KPFA public radio situation in Berkeley, CA; Kansas’s board of education’s decision to eliminate the teaching of evolution from school curricula, and most telling, the standoff between the Chinese government and Falun Gong.

This tension has also spilled over politically, as nearly every region of the world experiences escalating conflict: the continuing unresolved tension between U.S. and Iraq; Kosovo; mounting rebel forces in Indonesia, Columbia, Sri Lanka, and numerous African countries; the threats of independence from Taiwan and Dagestan; the volatility of North Korea; and the on-again, off-again conflict between India and Pakistan.

Writing this essay in August 1999, only halfway through this troubling Saturn-Uranus “world transit,” it will be interesting to see if on a political scale the Saturn-Uranus beach ball can be held in dynamic tension, or if indeed any of the mounting conflicts will implode or burst. If we look to what has happened on the material and psychological levels, then yes, it would seem quite plausible that one or more global conflicts will begin to "break."
