As we identify with
the two fish in the symbol of Pisces, we are not able to gain perspective
on the context which we find ourselves. The phrase, "The water we swim
in," is appropriate here, for this refers to the inability to see outside
the paradigms we find oursevles embedded. As the fish in Pisces, we are
not able to see outside our own stories, unable to transcend the partiality
of our own perspectives, and unwilling to let go of the fervent emotional
attachments to narratives.
The symbol of Aquarius
represents a radical reversal of identification. As Aquarius we identify with
the water-bearer, we are in
the heavens looking down upon the ocean we pour out of our vessel. Thus,
our perspective—our consciousness—has fundamentally changed. We are no
longer fish unable to see through our paradigm, but we are above all paradigms,
in control of belief systems. We see that the belief systems of the past
were only partially true.
The specific turn
of consciousness that will occur at this time has many names—a turn from
rationality to Vision-logic (Wilber),or to the Overmind (Aurobindo), or
to the Aperspectival World (Gebser). Although there are important differences
between these structures of consciousness, the fundamental similarity
is that there is a transition from the current mode of consciousness to
a type of consciousness that makes the patternings of the former mode
of consciousness transparent.
The end result is that
the majority of us (generations from now) will be able to "see through" the
limitations and constrictions of the current mode of consciousness. The symbolic
transformation of Pisces to Aquarius captures this turn quite well. Identifying
with Aquarius, we are no longer trapped by the water that was once the context
for Pisces. We are in control of this water, we are able to implement this
water as a tool.
What will mostly likely
occur during this transformation will be the ability to see through the archetypal
structures of consciousness that
have been the basis for religions, national identification, and myths.
The vast majority of us will be detaching from identification of one belief
system or religion and be able to see the founding archetypes which act
as templates for the religions, myths, and tribal identity of the world.
As Stan Grof states in
the recently published, The Consciousness Revolution, "Traditionally,
what organized religion has done is to unify a group of people by focusing
on specific archetypal figures and themes and claiming that they are unique"(1)—at
the expense of equally valid belief systems. It is fitting that Uranus
rules Aquarius, because Uranus is traditionally the planet associated with
the study of archetypes. By being able to hold multiple perspectives and archetypes
in awareness simultaneously, a sort of mandalic, paradoxical consciousness
will arise—the sort of 'crazy wisdom' that is often associated with Uranus.
