Square: The square occurs when two planets are approximately 90 degrees away from each other in the sky. This is a highly charged, tense, often frustrating planetary alignment. The energies in this combination are not only out of sync but drive in completely opposite directions. The energy is very much similar to the way magnets interact when two positive or two negative poles meet.

Often the individual with a square in his or her natal chart will repress one of the planets involved in the square at the expense of the other. This strategy is ineffective as the denied planet's energies will re-emerge internally or externally until resolution or adequate acknowledgement occurs.

Because of the contentious dynamism of this aspect, the square often produces the most dramatic, visible crises. However, these crises provide us with the will to overcome major obstacles in our lives. As the sextile is similar to Uranus in its energy, the square has much in common with Saturn, the planet of constraint, frustration, and the gateway to growth.

Trine: The trine occurs when planets are approximately 120 degrees away from each other in the sky. This aspect usually grants a harmonious flow of energy between the planets involved. Energy is allowed to interchange between planets in a unrestricted, open manner. Often the trine can invoke a feeling of contentment and well-being in the individual. However, in challenging situations there might not be enough energy to rise to the situation since this aspect can induce passivity in the individual.

Opposition: The opposition occurs when two planets are approximately 180 degrees away from each other in the sky. The opposition is like the square in that its effects are stressful and often problematic, however, unlike the square, the opposition produces head-on, confrontational energy.

One cannot ignore one planet as one can in the square--the individual is more than likely to acknowledge both planets involved--however, one planet is often believed to be 'other,' to be 'not me,' to be disavowed in one's experience. This is to say that this energy produces a polarized dichotomy in which the individual only identifies with one planetary energy.

This aspect has a high tendency toward psychological projection in which one planet's energy is unconsciously displaced into the exterior environment. Through time, and particularly through active engagement in relationship, the individual is apt to realize that the energy that was believed to be only in the exterior environment—that is, projected—is in reality in the individual's psyche as well.

* The inconjunct, or 150 degree aspect, and semi-square, 45 degree aspect, would certainly be included if this essay were expanded.
