	At risk of overstating the obvious, the United States has been experiencing an ample dosage of difficult times. Since the beginning of this century and the dubious election of Bush as the 43rd president, the U.S. has undergone a series of hardships and setbacks without respite. As significant as a simple litany of tribulations the nation has faced in recent years is the response to these difficulties: preoccupation with national security, a compulsive need to vilify and demonize foreign groups and nations, worry and doubt relative to the economic strength of the nation, and a near-religious hysteria over the impending apocalypse and end times in certain religious factions of the nation. But perhaps the best barometer of the health and strength of the nation is to contrast the beginning years of this century with the beginning of the previous two centuries. With the dawn of the 19th century, the United States was still in the process of forming its national identity, character, and foundational governing principles. An experiment in democracy in its infancy, the United States' new century would test principles and beliefs against the pragmatics of experience. Ushering in the new century, the American populace elected Thomas Jefferson as president. The shift in political party that Jefferson's presidency represented marked the first peaceable exchange of power in any modern democracy. As the foremost spokesman of American idealism, Jefferson was arguably the greatest figure representing the spirit of freedom toward which America has always aspired. Commandeering the United States in the beginning of the 19th century, Jefferson enjoyed tremendous popularity from the voting public, even if his governmental detractors were outspoken and vitriolic. As fate would have it, arguably the greatest real estate bargain in history occurred under Jefferson's presidency. Lacking foresight and good sense, Napoleon sold Jefferson the territory of Louisiana for a significantly small sum. Nearly doubling the total size of the United States, the Louisiana Purchase enhanced the country's wealth in many senses of the word and foreshadowed a century of prosperity, progress, and pioneering spirit. Beginning the 20th century, the United States benefited from the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, as much a renaissance man as Jefferson. Roosevelt's industriousness and extreme diversity of pursuits matched a nation that was growing in power and becoming increasingly varied in character and makeup. Roosevelt's presidency naturally corresponded to his eclecticism. In foreign policy, Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize for his interventions in the Russo-Japanese war. In domestic policy, Roosevelt intervened in business relations like no other president before or since. Arguably his greatest contribution, Roosevelt's efforts in nature conservation were unique in the legacy of the American presidency.
