	Regardless of one's ideological filters and biases, one must admit that the dawn of the 21st century is troubling relative to the leadership and legacy of the beginning of the previous two centuries. Perhaps before deferring to analysis, it is best to simply list the presidents at the dawn of each century: Jefferson, Roosevelt, and George W. Bush. Jefferson and Roosevelt were ideological brothers in their support of the common American. Both presidents enacted policy that assisted the average American of the day, the farmer and the industrial worker. In comparison, Bush, as indicative of many current political representatives, is more concerned with forming alliances with big business. Jefferson and Roosevelt were unwavering relative to enlightened reform. By contrast, Bush's evangelical faith is questionably devotion reliant more upon political leverage than divine inspiration. Whereas policy in the age of Jefferson was guided by rational, enlightened ideals, policy in the age of Bush appears to appeal to convictions not levied by critical thought or reflection—convictions like "The Rapture," "The Second Coming," and a near-literalism in the Christian Bible. With immediate difficulties at hand—mounting foreign policy problems, terrorism, and the Iraq war—and with arguably greater hardships looming in the distance—an uncontrollable debt, an impending energy crisis, and a rising discrepancy between rich and poor—the new American century has created and incurred a sizeable array of troubling scenarios and complexities. Perhaps what is most troubling is that one of the greatest of American qualities—optimism—is in short supply. What follows is an overview of recent events in the United States from an astrological perspective. The main thesis of astrology—that the movement of celestial objects correlates with affairs on earth—is equally applicable to individuals as it is to nations and groups. Astrology may not illuminate any ultimate meaning or evolutionary arc relative to current events, but it does have the advantage of revealing significant planetary alignments that correspond to many of the difficulties that the United States has been facing since the beginning of this century.
