Prisoner abuse as detailed above are indicative of the Pluto-Mars interface
War and the Pluto-Mars interface

As pictures of the abuse in the Abu Ghraib prison were released, president Bush remarked that the documents did not reflect the values of America. Many analysts and commentators observed that since there are many Americas, the scandal may have not have represented all of the United States but is certainly reflective of attitudes of some Americans and some of United States' history.

The Iraqi conflict and all of its various sub-dramas have occurred as Pluto has been opposite the position of the United States' Mars, at 21 degrees Gemini. (see chart) When Pluto interacts with Mars through forming an aspect to it, Pluto tends to both intensify the aggressive, warlike impulses associated with Mars as it also tends to bring out the shadow side of war and Mars: brutality, abuse, and domination. Throughout the U.S.'s history, when Pluto has made hard aspects to the natal position of Mars (aspects of the conjunction, square, and opposition), the United States has been at war and often the aggressor or dominator in such wars. Although Bush may have been correct that the Abu Ghraib prison abuses do not represent the best of American values, they are not without precedent and symbolize the more horrorific and problematic consequences of war.

The Pluto-Mars equation can characterize the chaotic, disturbed, and horrorific aspects of war. As arguably the most irrational of all human endeavors, war is intrinsically unstable and violent; however, the Pluto-Mars combination represents war at its most atrocious and cruel. The preceding hard aspect between Pluto and the United States' Mars witnessed the height of the Vietnam conflict. As Pluto was squaring the United States Mars to the exact degree, both the Tet offensive—the greatest escalation of violence of the war—and the My Lai massacre occurred. (see chart) A list of all Pluto aspects to the United States Mars and their correlations are shown below:

Pluto Transits to United States' Mars:
