	Throughout much of 2003 and 2004, the planets Jupiter and Uranus formed an important opposition alignment to each other. When outer planets form significant alignments such as this, the expressions of these planets dominate the era under which the alignment governs. Understood another way, outer planet alignments can be viewed as a symbolic counterpoint to the quality of the spirit of the times on earth. The outer planet cycles are the great chronometers of change, heralding the shift from one era into the next. Given a very liberal orb of approximately fifteen degrees, the Jupiter-Uranus opposition was in effect from June of last year through August of 2004, nearly fourteen months of influence. Important alignments, such as oppositions and conjunctions, are cosmological signposts that suggest that each planet's qualities involve the other. However, rather than being just a simple addition of qualities, important alignments suggest a synthesis of qualities whereby emergent characteristics are born that are wholly new unto themselves. Thus, rather than being merely the simple addition of Jupiter and Uranus, the recent opposition between these two planets suggest a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Occurring approximately every seven years, oppositions and conjunctions concerning Jupiter and Uranus are not unlike notable waves that take us out further into the ocean of the unknown, for these alignments expand potentials and untested possibilities. Given the larger astrological context, Jupiter-Uranus alignments can be conceptualized as rather gentle proddings into the universe known as the Age of Aquarius. For, rather than take us back into the well-explored shores of tradition, Jupiter-Uranus alignments take us into the progressive, the forward-thinking, and the future.
