Democracy, Freedom, and Individual RightsInside each of is the intuition and idea that all of us should have the freedom and liberty to express our own personal truths, whatever that truth maybe. This truth may be shocking, disruptive, and upsetting, but most of us have a solid conviction that truth is something that is intrinsically of value and benefit. Sometimes this idea or conviction gets lost and is forgotten, but for the most part, we hold it as a right, if not a sacred right. This inborn idea of freedom of self-expression is an attribute of the astrological Uranus. During the 1960's, when Uranus and Pluto formed a powerful and long-lasting conjunction with each other, Uranus's psychological motivation toward freedom was given massive, titanic empowerment by the expressions of Pluto. For an entire generation, freedom of expression became radical freedom of expression, with masses of young people dropping out entirely from society and its conventions to find true liberation.
When Jupiter aligns with Uranus, the desire and yearning for freedom may not be as massive and extreme as during a Uranus-Pluto alignment, however, Jupiter does tend to expand the motivation for freedoms as associated with Uranus. Although Pluto and Uranus create a monstrous, overpowering force that simply impels new freedoms by revolutionary will, Jupiter-Uranus alignments are supportive of new social freedoms through reforms that appeal to our higher, wiser natures. This is not to say that Jupiter-Uranus alignments aren't rebellious or revolutionary—they can be—but they don't have the explosive, up-from-the-depths quality that is quite obvious during significant Uranus-Pluto aspects (such as during the 1960's).
Not only does Jupiter expand Uranus's association with individual rights and freedoms, but taken together, the two archetypes form a strong, ethical belief system that supports a diversity of freedoms for all peoples, nationalities, creeds, and affiliations. At its best, the Jupiter-Uranus combination is the symbolic counterpoint to a philosophy that doesn't tolerate, but celebrates, difference and assumes an aspiration to equality for all. Although not necessarily rebellious, if societal restraints become too oppressive and restrictive, the archetypal energy of the Jupiter-Uranus combination will inspire the need for increased freedoms and tolerance. From the perspective of Jupiter and Uranus, this great experiment called democracy should be pushed to its greatest capacity.
Just as major Jupiter-Uranus alignments are symbolic of pushing boundaries into the unknown and unexplored, the planetary combination is also an indication that the world's socio-political structures will be urged to go into unknown and progressive territories. New civil liberties, expansion of human rights, and the strong call toward higher and greater freedoms is often the trademark of Jupiter and Uranus combinations. Notably throughout this current Jupiter-Uranus opposition, India, the world's largest democracy, overthrew the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party due to perceived inequality in distribution of wealth. In its place, the more left-leaning Congress Party took power. In July 2004, Indonesia successfully held its first popular presidential elections. Throughout Venezuela, popular support has been seen for the ouster of incumbent president Hugo Chavez, a ruler accused of several human rights violations.
The surprising and most obvious manifestation, however, of the recent Jupiter-Uranus opposition has been the upsurge of gay rights. From a more noticeable presence in media and entertainment, to greater presence in religious and political office, to the controversial and heated topic of gay marriage, gay rights has taken center stage throughout this recent Jupiter-Uranus opposition. Not isolated to the United States, the gay rights issues has become a worldwide hot topic. From Asia, to Europe, to North America, gay liberties has become noticeably prominent in world politics. In the larger context of moving into the astrological Aquarian Age, Jupiter-Uranus alignments move us further into the realm of universal tolerance and diversity, alleged trademarks of this dawning Age.
