Technological and Scientific Innovation

One of the most obvious and apparent correlations with Jupiter-Uranus alignments are their penchant for increasing technological advances and scientific breakthroughs. If we think of the root meaning of technology, we can understand why it is affiliated with the archetype of Uranus. Technology may be defined as "The body of knowledge available to a society

that is of use in fashioning implements, practicing manual arts and skills, and extracting or collecting materials." Uranus is related to vision and creativity capacity to transcend natural conditions, so technology, in its broadest sense, is obviously related to Uranus. Tools—from the first agricultural implements to the latest computer gadgetry—allow us to go beyond the natural world into a world that fits more with a vision of the world as an ideal state. To improve upon nature—this may be Uranus's main collective impetus—and Jupiter aids Uranus's vision through expanding it and granting it success.

Just as the Jupiter-Uranus interface is oriented toward discovery of unexplored worlds, it is also correlated with the scientific truths, toward ascertaining knowledge from the very edge of the known world. Just as space is the final frontier in the realm of exploration, the world of the microscopic—the invisible world of energy and subatomic particles—has been the cutting edge of scientific discovery for many decades. During Jupiter-Uranus alignments, the ability of ascertaining insights into this new frontier of science increases exponentially.

In 1927, during a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Aries, Quantum physics received its greatest leap forward, and its central tenets of Indeterminacy and Complimentarily were born. As author Richard Tarnas asserts, "It has been said that in 1927 the pace of discovery in theoretical physics was probably greater than in any other year in the history of science." (1) Now, with Uranus making nearly a full revolution around the Sun, Quantum physics has gone from the world of the purely theoretical into the realm of applied science. Under this recent Jupiter-Uranus opposition, scientists in the United States and Europe working independently of each other, were able to successfully teleport—that is, "exchange information"—from one atom to another. This marked the first time that information was able to "leap" between two large particles without any known forces intervening. The implications are profound. Due to these discoveries, in the near future, an entire new breed of computers will be created that are infinitely more powerful than today's computers and will more precisely emulate human thinking.

As quantum computing is some years in the future, the world of wi-fi technology is here now, and wi-fi made its presence well-known during the Jupiter-Uranus opposition of 2003-2004. Wi-fi, or "wireless fidelity" is a technology that allows for computers and other peripherals to connect with each other without the need for physical connections. A technology that has been in existence for many years, wi-fi saw its greatest growth spurt during this recent Jupiter-Uranus opposition. Throughout 2003 and 2004, corporations like McDonald's and Starbuck's began to integrate wi-fi into their establishments. Known as "hot-spots," Time magazine estimated that nearly 30,000 establishments in the United States were wi-fi capable by the end of 2003. Certainly, the liberating (or at least the aspiration toward liberation) promise of wi-fi is congruent with the overall trajectory of the Jupiter-Uranus gestalt.
