The Jupiter-Uranus Opposition: The Larger Context

The power of astrological alignments lie in their ability to gauge a particular energy that dominates any point in time. Not unlike a large stringed instrument that resonates and vibrates at varying frequencies, the solar system can be likened to a cosmic conductor, orchestrating the various tones and notes of a grand symphony that we call evolution of life on planet earth.

From this perspective of life as a symphony, we can see that the Jupiter-Uranus movement of 2003-2004 is very, very different from the quality of the Saturn-Pluto opposition which dominated the years of 2001 through 2002. Darker in tone and timbre, the years of 2001 and 2002 had a much more serious, dramatic, and difficult quality to them than the light expansiveness and creative capacity of the Jupiter-Uranus ruled years of 2003 and 2004. From the perspective of resonance, neither energy can be judged as better or more agreeable than the other as both archetypal confluences have varying degrees of positive and difficult potentials. The most important thing is that the quality of energy is different—radically so. Saturn and Pluto in combination is dark and contractive while Jupiter and Uranus as a pairing is light and heaven bound. Saturn and Pluto can cast an ominous, fearful, and weighty cast to a time as Jupiter and Uranus opens us up to new horizons and has a general tone of excitability and stimulating charge. Saturn-Pluto times are generally conservative and limiting while Jupiter-Uranus years are awakening and more progressive in tone. Regardless if one views the various changing tone of life on earth as like music, a play, or the cadence of living organism, there really is no doubt that the earth has a soul and psychology not unlike our own.

The Jupiter-Uranus Alignment in Light of Basic Perinatal Matrices

If we assume that earth is a living being that has something analogous to its own psychology and that astrological alignments mirror the state of the earth's being, than we may take these inferences one step further: the earth is in a constant state of becoming and evolving that is reflected in the stages of the individual birth process. The work of eminent psychiatrist Stan Grof can illuminate this hypothesis further. Through numerous decades of research involving the exploration of consciousness, Grof has theorized that human consciousness goes beyond the physical brain and is part of cosmic consciousness.

Grof observed that under certain repeated conditions, individuals would ultimately access dimensions surrounding the birth experience. Grof has called these experiences surrounding birth "perinatal experiences"—a gateway between personal, biographical experiences and transpersonal dimensions. Put another way, perinatal experiences appear to be the threshold between individual, biographical information and archetypal, cosmic, and universal experiences. When individuals have access to the perinatal dimensions of experience, they often undergo emotions and sensations of tremendous intensity and profundity—beyond what is normally thought of as possible.

Through further observations, Grof understood perinatal experiences to fall within four distinct categories of experience. These categories, which he called "basic perinatal matrices" (or BPM's for short), not only capture the biological dimensions of the birth experience, but also can be considered to be a template of experiences lived out on an individual and collective scale, seen in various dimensions of our lives: art, politics, religion, and popular culture.

Interestingly, the archetypal expressions surrounding alignments of the outer planets are congruent with the phenomena of the basic perinatal matrices. From this perspective, we can treat the world not unlike an individual who is experiencing various dimensions and sequences of birth in their development.
