Bob Moog
1934: Jupiter-Uranus Opposition
(Jupiter in Libra; Uranus in Aries)

Inventor and innovator Robert Moog is born. Moog has had a tremendous impact on music technology and electronic music in particular. Moog was responsible for the invention of modular synthesis, the first mass-
produced synthesizer, the lowpass filter, and popularization of the Theremin and MIDI.

Although most historians consider the beginning of swing to have occurred in the year 1935, 1934 is the year when the proverbial train left the station and the elements which would lead to Swing's decade-plus domination of the cultural landscape cohered. In 1934, Benny Goodman, after being involved in various big bands and garnering a reputation as a solid recording musician, forms his own band and begins to create a name for himself in jazz circles. In the same year, Goodman scores three top ten hits and lands a recording contract with Columbia. 1934 is also the year in which the Dorsey Brothers, arguably along with Goodman the core of the Swing movement, form their own band.

Composed by Richard Whiting, the first musical composition with the phrase "rock'n'roll" in the title was copywrited in August of 1934.

Gershwin's most ambitious piece, the folk opera, "Porgy and Bess," is completed and receives its premiere the following year.
