Music with a high degree
of the Uranus archetype tends toward agitation, shock, exhilaration, and improvisation.
Being the boundary breaker of the rchetypes, Uranus is
always found in music which is "edgy," somewhat dangerous, provocative, and
magnetic. The whirring arpeggios in a Paganini solo or Philip Glass Ensemble
piece, the brilliant free-form solos of jazz greats like Coltrane, Miles Davis,
or Al Dimeola, and the inventiveness and virtuosity of rock guitarists like
Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, or Pete Townsend are all indicative of this feature
of Uranus energy.
Lucifer, as the light
bringer of consciousness, is the mythological figure of the Judeo-Christian
tradition which best represents the Uranus archetype. It is no coincidence,
then, that the music which best exemplifies the Uranus archetype is the "devil's
music," challenging convention and ushering in new forms to replenish and
invigorate dying, prosaic, and outworn genres of music.

1900: Jupiter-Uranus
Conjunction in Sagittarius
Composer
Kurt Weill is born. Weill was known for his ability to synthesize many
different idioms–classical, folk, jazz– into a unique, unrestrained style
of composition. His politically-charged collaborations with writer Berthold
Brecht, namely

City, are perennial favorites, constantly reappraised and renewed by new
generations of artists.
Composer Aaron Copland is born. Considered by many to be the U.S.'s
premiere composer for the first half of the 20th century, Copland
was the first and most prominent composer to borrow liberally from American
popular music, namely, jazz, ragtime, blues and musical comedy. Works like
Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and Fanfare for the Common Man
were Copland's contribution at establishing a uniquely American classical
music that departed from the confines of the European tradition. Moreover,
his music is popular (thus, typical of Uranus archetype awakening
and stimulating Jupiter's proclivity for popularity). Of 20th century classical
works, Copland's pieces are the enduring favorites of any concert program.
If a hurting symphony orchestra needs to bolster revenue and membership,
Copland goes on the repertoire to represent 20th century music.
French composer Gabriel Favre's first opera, Prometheepremieres.
Although there is nothing particularly noteworthy about the music of this
unremarkable opera, the piece holds to the archetypal forces at work in
two ways. One, the title, French for the mythological Titan, Prometheus,
is the figure in Greek Mythology most associated with the Uranus archetype.
Secondly, the opera's grand scale–calling for over 700 performers–speaks
to Uranus's ability to stimulate (if not overstimulate) Jupiter's penchant
for exaggeration and fanfare.

of musician Buddy Bolden.
(other sources say the year he formally organized a jazz band was actually
1895).
