The successful "Tommy" |
|
 |
Even actor Richard Chamberlain,
who worked with Russell on The Music Lovers uses phrases to describe
Russell which evoke the planetary combinations in his chart: "A volcanic,
dangerous brooding (Sun-Pluto) which, though few words were spoken...electrified
the set." (Jupiter-Uranus)

However, Russell was
not always the enfant terrible exploring taboo subjects through radical
and outlandish flights of fantasy. Oftentimes, it takes a transit or two from
an outer planet to "wake up" hidden, unexplored, or repressed potentials in
the birthchart.
Russell began making
films full time for the BBC from 1959-1970. During this eleven year period,
his films were popular, restrained, typical, above-average quality programs
often exploring the lives of artists. However, at the end of his stint with
the BBC and with the creation of Women in Love, Russell became more
of an artist, breaking away from the old conventions and creating a new, fully
individual style.
At this time Russell
was not afraid to take risks, to push boundaries, and to go outside established
narrative techniques. Oliver Reed, an actor
closely associated with Russell, marked the transition: "When I worked with
Ken on 'Women in Love' he was starting to go crazy. But in the days when we
made TV movies about composers and writers, he was a sane, likable, television
director. Now he's an insane, likable, film director." This "craziness" or
"insanity" occurred at Russell's Uranus opposition, where Uranus was opposing
his natal Uranus by transit. This transit is often associated with major upheaval,
crisis, and in the case of artists and creative types, breakthroughs and inspiration.
Throughout late 1968
through early 1969--the filming of Women in Love--Uranus had just
exited the sign of Virgo and entered Libra, opposing Russell's Jupiter-Uranus
conjunction in Aries. To compound matters, Jupiter conjoined Uranus at
that time as well. So, there was a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in 1969
exactly opposite the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Russell's birthchart--an
awakening of creativity by transit if there ever was one.
