Outside of "What's your
sign" and "Rising sign," "Saturn Return" is the expression most bandied about
by the astrological lay public and is usually followed by reactions of dread
and revulsion. Just what is the Saturn Return and does it deserve the negative
reception it usually receives?
Quite simply, the Saturn
Return occurs when Saturn makes a full revolution in the sky to "return" to
its position in the birthchart. For instance, if one was born with Saturn
at 10 degrees Aquarius, the Saturn Return occurs after Saturn has made its
way through all 12 signs of the Zodiac to come back to 10 degrees Aquarius.
It takes approximately
29.5 years for Saturn to complete this journey, but the influence of the Saturn
Return is believed to last two to three years around the specific return date.
So, the first Saturn Return occurs between ages 28-30 and the second Saturn
Return around 57-60. Crash Course finished.
Saturn is the planetary
archetype of restriction, pain, fear, suppression, restraint, limits, tests,
and discipline. Taken in isolation, Saturn would deserve the negative reputation
it has received--it's influence certainly is no fun--but taken in the greater
context of human development, it is necessary and invaluable, for it forces
growth, maturation, and actualizes potentials.
