Although everyone's first
Saturn Return is different, a few generalizations can be made:
• Any lingering qualities of adolescence come to an abrupt end.
• A trimming of
non-essentials occurs. A cutting of the fat of everything that is not crucial
to one's lifestyle. Some dreams of youth are put to bed.
• An increasing sense of one's own mortality can induce high stress and anxiety.
• A fuller understanding
and actualization of one's core nature. Since Saturn is an organizer and a
consolidator, one's life path becomes more clear and defined.
•A time to build a foundation for adulthood.
• As Saturn is the archetype of concrete manifestation and structure, something invariably manifests at this time which is enduring and long-term: partnerships and marriage; one's first child; crystalization of a vocational choice.
To focus on the positive
side, many firsthand reports of Saturn Returns emphasize the liberating aspect
of this time. Many people stress that one gains the freedom to be one's self,
to make choices with a greater sense of personal authority, and to be free
from fears which pervaded youth and adolescence.
Author Stephen Arroyo
suggests that the quality of one's own first Saturn Return and "the extent
to which it is felt to be a 'difficult' time depends entirely on how one has
lived during the previous 29 years, how much one has worked efficiently toward
achieving specific goals, how much depth the person
has built into his understanding and creative pursuits, and to what extent
the individual has expressed or suppressed his or her fundamental nature."(1)
To gain a greater sense
of the first Saturn Return, one must look at what relationships Saturn makes
with other planets in the birthchart. There are two general reactions that people can make when
Saturn makes contact to another planet in the birthchart.
