In the course of a lifetime, we often encounter individuals that may carry a certain mystique, an unmistakable presence, and a hard-to-define "something." There are particular qualities about these individuals that may be difficult to talk about explicitly, yet intuitively, we realize that there are characteristics about these individuals that are different, unusual, and even a little extraordinary. Perhaps it is a penetrating gaze that is both fascinating as it is difficult to tolerate, perhaps it is their remarkable quality of awareness and presence, or perhaps it is simply a larger-than-life quality they exude that makes them stand out from the mass of humanity. We all have the experiences whereby we meet individuals that are not like the average person on the street. These individuals radiate qualities that go beyond our normal expectations—striking, "out there," powerful, intense, spacey, blissful, weird, wild, or extremely private. The common denominator about these individuals is that there is something that remains in them that hasn't fully submitted to the societal conditioning process. The one universal about these individuals is that there is something unique about their presentation that hasn't succumbed to the rituals, routines, and habits enforced by societal norms.
In astrological terms, these individuals typically have the Sun in aspect to an outer planet in the birth chart. When the Sun, the equivalent of the "ego" or center of the personality, is in angular relationship with an outer planet at birth, the individual will contend with, carry, and exude the qualities associated with the outer planet. Although there are vast differences to the qualities of each outer planet, what unites them is that they symbolize energies that stand in contrast to the limiting circumstances of social conditioning—the process whereby we submit to various normalizing factors proscribed by the time and place of the society within which we are raised. The outer planets are often called the transpersonal planets; they symbolize energies greater than individual concerns and even greater than societal concerns. Rather, by transpersonal, one is typically referring to experiences and modes of being that extend to universal life processes of a cosmological significance. Although an incomplete description, we might suggest that transpersonal experiences tap into the deeper, vaster, extreme states of being that inform our life. These are the large, collective forces that shape and contour the wide expanses of place and time—epoch-making, era-building, civilization-creating, eon-forging.
When the Sun is in aspect to the outer planets, the ego is a conduit and carrier of these larger-than-life forces. As one might assume, there are difficulties and constructive qualities to the Sun aspecting an outer planet. On the affirming side, the personality is in touch with archetypal energies that are far deeper, broader, and enriching than those normally contained or conditioned within normal social discourse. Thus, the life path and personality of the individual with Sun in aspect to an outer planet will carry the extremes of the transpersonal dimension in some fashion. This is what gives the individual with Sun in aspect to an outer planet that quality of difference, of standing apart, of being in touch with psychological energies of greater expanse and trajectory than what is normally considered typical.
