In many ways, we are using the Neptunian archetype to feed the supercharged, hypertrophed Uranian impulse. As a Uranian culture we are taking those parts of the Neptunian archetype which feeds our individuality—"image" through movies and fashion—and disowning those parts of the Neptunian archetype which do not feed the Uranian archetype—compassionate involvement in community, empathic connection to others, true development of spirituality, and legitimacy of the inner imaginal dimension. This is not to say that the Uranian is mutually exclusive to Neptune's higher aspirations, in fact, there will (and must be) an amazing opportunity for integration of these two archetypes in which neither is compromised but, in fact, matured and deepened.

I believe we are on the precipice of this opportunity. Neptune (as stated in a previous essay) will be returning to its position of discovery in 2009. As with Uranus, Neptune returning to its point of origin represents both a deepening and a broadening of the potentials of this archetype.

Upon initial discovery of Neptune, we saw both a flourishing of Utopist socialism and spiritualism. Many people underestimate the effect Spiritualism had on American culture in the 19th century—it is, besides Mormonism (which also emerged at the same time) the biggest single religious movement of American origin. Not only did the idea of socialism emerge at this time as well, but huge collective movements with a socialist upturn appeared on the scene when Neptune was discovered.

Look for the same central focus—religious renewal with a metaphysical orientation and political upheaval with a communal theme—to re-emerge during Neptune's return in 2009. As the Communist Manifesto and Socialist utopia's of the mid-nineteenth century reacted to the hyper-Uranian capitalist thrust at the time, look for the Communist inclinations of c.2009 to also act as a counterthrust to the hyper-individualistic push of early 21st century Capitalism.

But not all of the Neptunian re-emergence will be thrust against Uranus. In fact, this moment in time will be a chance for Uranus to begin to join forces with Neptune, for the two archetypes are not mutually exclusive but potentially mutually enhancing. Neptune can potentially allow for the matrix for Uranus's hyper--individualism to turn inward, to be oriented in Neptune's domain of vision, the imaginal, and dreams. That is, the current external orientation of today's world socio-cultural climate will most likely be confronted at this time, but not suppressing Uranus's urge toward individualistic freedom.
