The legacy of the dark, weighty, and constrictive Saturn-Pluto opposition makes a study in stark contrast relative to the spiritual heights attained during the previous Uranus-Neptune conjunction. Even without the knowledge of astrology, nearly everyone could sense or articulate a dramatic shift in the spirit of the times with the impact of the events of the last few years. However, it is from our current perspective that we are able to reflect upon the events of the Uranus-Neptune conjunction with greater insight and clarity. The conjunction, beginning in the late 1980's and lasting all of the 1990's, had a lasting impact on all facets of society and culture: the sweeping changes in music and film, the rise of multiculturalism and global culture, the "velvet revolutions" of the political landscape, health care reforms, the New Age and the controversial changes in established religions, technological innovations, the overhaul in business and commerce, and the impact of youth and alternative culture.1
The Archetypal Synthesis
As an algebra of life, astrology is simply the addition of different elements—signs with planets, aspects between planets, and houses with rulerships. However, as astrology is also a science of qualities, these additions take on characteristics greater than the sum of their parts. A conjunction between Uranus and Neptune is certainly no exception. When the Promethean fire of Uranus strikes the vast, divine ocean of Neptune, we are collectively called to awaken our urges for artistic inspiration, to re-vision and rebirth our collective political and cultural myths and dreams, to arouse our slumbering spiritual impulses, to revolutionize dying religious structures, and to reignite our capacity for healing, compassion, sensitivity, and sense of oneness. Similarly, when the angelic choir of Neptune pours forth its paradisal waters into the chaotic and creative lightening fields of Uranus, we reimagine our own unique and independent spirits; we dream into being technologies that help free us from oppressive and old ways of being; we surrender to necessary and sudden inner and outer upheavals, rebellions, and breakthroughs; and we gain inspiration to envision evolutionary progress and more idealistic future possibilities.
On the surface, the Uranus-Neptune combination is a bizarre, if not somewhat antagonistic one. Uranus's masculine, edgy and defiant hypervigilance seems apparently mismatched with the feminine, flowing, soft, and merging energies of Neptune. However, like all odd couples, the resulting marriage of these archetypes creates unique offspring and the most recent conjunction created some highly dynamic, unforgettable results. Possibly the one word to best describe the synthesis of these energies is the now-hackneyed phrase that emerged from recent New Age lexicon: co-creation. As Uranus is symbolic of the masculine creative force within all of us, when we are in touch with this energy, we are masters of our own destiny. The only limits to manifesting our authentic, true selves is directly proportional to how in or out of touch we are with our own divine spark, our own Uranus. However, the "co" in co-creation implies that this creative spark must be coupled with something much greater than our individual selves for our ingenuity to fully manifest: angels, higher selves, god, bliss, or divine love. These entities and concepts all point to the more spiritual and divine side of humanity, a side adequately captured by Neptune. With the recent Uranus-Neptune conjunction, this co-creative force became more available and amplified. To varying degrees of conscious intent, we co-created new myths, creations, innovations, and associations whose impact cannot be fully measured for generations to come.
