The legacy of the Uranus-Neptune conjunction
The Dream Ends?

During the Uranus-Neptune conjunction, we became puers, peter pans, and Cinderellas, living out our fantasies, fulfilling our dreams, and flying high into the world of our most inspired imaginings. Now, having faced the trials of the Saturn-Pluto opposition, we were
asked to leave the heavenly firmament and become Atlases and Sisyphuses, carrying the weight of the world and nearly collapsing under the mass of our crumbling institutions and structures. The collective dreams of the Uranus-Neptune conjunction seem inextricably and conclusively dead and buried, or are they?

Often the greatest potentials of a powerful outer planetary alignment is not seen until the generation born under the alignment comes of age. This may, in fact, be happening currently with the generation of the Uranus-Pluto alignment of the 1960's. Certainly the previous Uranus-Neptune conjunction of the early nineteenth century gave birth to a sizeable number of notable revolutionaries, religious reformers, and artists. A comprehensive list is beyond the scope of this article, however this generation featured some the most concentrated literary, artistic, political, and religious accomplishment in contemporary history. Any short list of this era would include Karl Marx, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Herman Melville, Mary Baker Eddy, and Bahá'u'lláh. If the progeny of the nineteenth century Uranus-Neptune conjunction is any indication, then the "indigo children"—the New Age designation for children born under the most recent Uranus-Neptune conjunction—should also bear tremendous fruit in religion, politics, and art. Moreover, with transiting Pluto conjoining the Uranus-Neptune conjunction as this generation comes of age, any latent spiritual, artistic, and political visions should be blown wide open at the time. Although the initial impact of the Uranus-Neptune conjunction is over, the legacy has only just begun.

References and Notes:

1. There appears to be a trend toward using wider orbs when discussing significant outer planetary alignments. In a recent article by Donna Cunningham on Uranus-Neptune subgenerations (see The Mountain Astrologer Aug/Sept 2002), orbs of 8 degrees were used for Uranus-Neptune oppositions and conjunctions. Wider still, orbs of 10-15 degrees were used by Richard Tarnas when discussing Uranus conjunctions and oppositions to Neptune and Pluto in his Prometheus the Awakener, Woodstock CT: Spring Publications, 1995. For the purposes of this essay and to fully illuminate the impact of the recent Uranus-Neptune conjunction, an orb of fifteen degrees will used.

8. Although the birth of photography lies on a continuum rather than as a single event, the first known surviving photograph is credited to Charles Niepce, 1827, at the end of the Uranus-Neptune conjunction of the nineteenth century. Color photography was popularized during the Uranus-Neptune opposition at the beginning of the twentieth century. The first wave of Disney's classic animated feature films were released under the Uranus-Neptune trine. Finally, the boom of television-as-medium and the birth of color TV occurred under the last Uranus-Neptune square of the 1950's.

9. Thomas and John Knoll gave the license to distribute their fledging photo manipulation program to Adobe Systems who later bought the program outright after it became a commercial success.

10. MDMA was first synthesized by the German pharmaceutical company Merck in 1912 and later patented in 1914.
