It is quite possible that the great economic boom of the burgeoning Information Era will dramatically come to an end at this time and/or ecological crises of unprecedented proportions will commence. Undoubtedly, this will be a time of great collective stress and upheaval. This will be a time, in the most vague sense, when the collapse of old structures will happen concurrently along with the birth of something novel and new.

The fact that it coincides with the return of Neptune to its discovery position gives us an indication of how this time of crisis will be inflected.(2) Just as the revolutions of 1848 emphasized the collective over the tyranny of the industrialists at the time, 2009-2010 could mark a global sentiment over and against the transnational global corporations and the mega-mergers which have occurred and continue to occur.

If the widening gap between rich and poor and have and have-nots continues to expand, this is most likely a time when the values and mores which have allowed this to happen will be challenged significantly. If a global economic collapse occurs, the emphasis on Neptune at this time suggests many things: a return to faith and renewal in spirituality; escapism through drugs, diversions, and entertainment from cold, harsh economic reality; and an emphasis on humanitarian endeavors—grassroots or otherwise.

One must anticipate an interest in the intangible, the otherworldly, the paranormal and parapsychology around 2009/10—basically anything which doesn’t have a materialist, sensate orientation should manifest. This could have both positive and negative consequences. This could emphasize Neptune’s penchant for escapism and illusion, particularly if a “this world” orientation is needed with the probability for environmental degradation at this time quite high. However, this could also suggest a time of legitimization of that which currently remains academically marginalized.

(1)One cannot underestimate the role of the Uranus-Pluto alignments which took place in 1793 (the French Revolution) and in 1850.

(2) Throughout the greater portion of 2009, Jupiter will be conjuncting Neptune, thus amplifying the archetypal manifestations of Neptune.
