The reputation of the
trine as the aspect of gifts is reinforced here, as Wilber is truly gifted
as a spiritual visionary, a farsighted polymath without equal. To complete this limited
analysis of Wilber's birthchart(1), we turn to the "power of midpoints."
The midpoint between Uranus and Neptune (which I argue is the planetary pairing
most instrumental to both the foundation and development of Wilber's thought)
is directly opposite Mars. Thus, Mars harnesses the archetypes of these planets
and asserts them out into the external environment.
Turning now to crucial
astrological transits in Wilber's biography, the period of 1972-1973 was the
"axial age" of his
life as thinker. It was at this time that Wilber abandoned his strictly scientific
and medical pursuits for the study of consciousness, east-west psychology,
and, for lack of a better term, the perennial philosophy.
True to its reputation
as awakener and constant of change, Uranus conjoined Wilber's natal Neptune
in 1972-1973. At this time, Wilber made a marked shift in his intellectual
pursuits, dropping out of a Ph.D. program to pursue writing what would be
his first book, The Spectrum of Consciousness.
One might say that Uranusconjoining Neptune and trining Wilber's Sun,
Mercury, and Marsawakened, stimulated, and liberated the potentials
of Wilber's capacity as a great intellectual synthesizer,
a thinker with incredible insight and scope. Wilber's daimon, his genius,
was sparked and enlivened by this transit by Uranus.
If the Uranus conjunction
to Neptune was not enough to stimulate Wilber's broad vision, a second transit
between this planetary pairing would further intensify Wilber's syncretic
scope. Between 1980 and 1982, transiting Neptune opposed Wilber's natal Uranus.
This period gave birth to two of Wilber's classics, Up from Eden and
The Atman Project. If the decade of the seventies marked a period in
which Wilber found his niche as a thinker and brilliantly synthesized thought
before him, the brief period of 1980-82 was when Wilber really came into his
own as a thinker and introduced original concepts such as the oft-sighted pre-trans
fallacy.
During the next ten years, Wilber would expand and elaborate upon his conceptual
models, making necessary adjustments, however this period, albeit far from fallow,
did not match the amazing growth and vision of the preceding decade.
Between 1993-1996, however, Wilber would go through an intellectual growth spurt
and make huge leaps in his conceptual models, advancing his "four
quadrant" map for
the first time. Again, the planetary duo correlated with such cerebral and
spiritual gains is none other than Neptune-Uranus.
The collective Neptune-Uranus
conjunction was very tight at this time, landing on both Wilber's Jupiter
and Venus.
